What is Fascial Counterstrain?

A new and emerging approach to fascial release, FCS is a low intensity type of manual therapy that works to release spasm and inflammation in all body tissues. Therefore, FCS allows the trained clinician to treat dysfunction associated not only with muscle, ligaments, and bone, but also organs, viscera, arteries, veins, adipose, head and neck lymphatics, and dura. All of these tissues can be adversely affected by dysfunction, often attributed to trapped inflammation. This can manifest as pain and sensitivity, which is the body’s local protective response to injury. Pain that was once of local origin can grow to become more global and systemic, which we call central sensitization. Once the inflammatory response is triggered, painful tender points develop throughout the body. FCS releases the guarded tissue and tender points by gently unloading the affected area.

By positioning the body in a particular, anatomical way, and by using gentle compression and glides of an affected area or tissue, Meghan is able to facilitate a therapeutic release using FCS. As a result, the tissue relaxes, reducing tension and relieving pain. A patient will often realize that a once tender point will feel soft and less painful upon release. On a deeper level, this indicates the first step toward complete tissue healing and a return to function to allow the patient to be more effective with postural adjustments and strengthening exercises.
